Border Run 23-Day 7

Huntly Resort VIC – Home-Corryong VIC

Another sleep in morning in a comfy bed….YAY!!!

The final leg today and it’s a short 392 kms to get home. Mick & Lynne are coming out for a ride too this morning and we decide to have breakfast in Violet Town.

It’s still fresh so we don our heated suits…have I mentioned how great they are and head out for a leisurely ride. Along the way is the Colbinabin Silo Art, so naturally again I have to stop for a pic.

Colbinabin Silo Art

What a beautiful morning to be out riding with great friends and before you know it we are in Violet Town parked up ready for breakfast.

Breakfast in Violet Town

I’ve been wanting poached eggs for breakfast for a couple of days now so actually get to have them. But before too long it is time to part ways and head home to Karl and Howie.

Up onto the freeway, through Wodonga and onto The Murray Valley Highway (a road I know very well these days), stopped for fuel in Tallangatta before the last spurt home. Other than getting to use a little bit of the sides of my tyres and dodging the potholes it wasn’t really anything exciting.

Into the driveway and parked  up at 2:03pm after completing a mammoth 4686.1 kms for the total trip. Dudley ticked over a nice round 119,000 kms and is due for a major service.

Great work Dudley.

So the wrap up

Total Kms: 4686.1

Accommodation costs: $563.50

Fuel costs: $645.39 (most expensive fuel was at Nullarbor Roadhouse at a whopping $2.98/lt)

Food/other: $297.02 kept this down by taking my own breakfast (porridge & milk), not having big lunches (just a pre-packed cheese & tomato sambo) and eating a reasonable evening meal.

Total cost: $1505.91

Not too bad for a 7 day travelling holiday.

Thanks for reading the journey of the Border Run 23.

Border Run 23-Day 6

Mildura tVIC o Fatman & LTP Huntly Resort VIC

Thankfully this morning there was no frost and I got my sleep in til 7am which I thought was a bit rude as I could’ve slept a bit longer. All packed up again and load Dudley before getting away around 8ish into another beautiful sunny but fresh day. Once again the heated suit is plugged in and turned on.

It’s so lovely out here, once you get past Red Cliffs and the vineyards and fruit fields, all the land is either grazing or Canola fields for miles and miles. The road surfaces along the A79 – Calder Highway isn’t as nice as the roads I’ve travelled and there is a lot more traffic using these roads.

Canola fields

Every time I travel through Ouyen, the bakery is closed but not today so I stop for a coffee and say g’day to some old fella and his dog…who clearly wanted to have a chat but I just wanted to have a peaceful coffee and get going.

Ouyen Mallee Bakery

Into Sea Lake and I notice there is new to me Silo Art so naturally I had to stop for a pic.

Sea Lake Silo Art

Back on the road and the speed limit drops to 100kph for the rest of the days ride.

Fuel in Wycheproof and chat to Fatman and arrange to meet for lunch in Marong at the bakery.

We are stopped by a road train in Charlton

Charlton train

Busy little lunch town of Marong and Fatman & LTP are there waiting for me. Nice easy lunch, pie and milkshake.

Marong Bakery lunch

A short 15 minutes to the Fatman & LTP Huntly Resort for the night where Dudley gets a nice warm garage to sleep in, I get a comfy bed and a home cooked meal, super-hot shower and fabulous company……what more could you ask for.  Thanks heaps guys, you’re the best!!!

Border Run 23-Day 5

Wudinna SA to Mildura VIC

To say it was cold overnight was an understatement – poor Dudley froze at -2deg. No amount of clearing the windscreen or mirrors helped as they just refroze, as for the seat…it was rock hard. It really was a lovely mornings sky though with the pink streak and moon shining down on us…just freezing.

Poor Dudley had to stay outside
Frozen Dudley
Early morning beauty

By the time I got to Kyancutta (12 km down the road) it was -5 degrees and thankful again for the heated suit, cos it certainly got a work out. The fog was thick as again, so it was slow and steady going until I got to Kimba but was still cold. Was too cold to stop even with the sun up and I didn’t want to unplug my heated suit…lol.

A break in the fog as the sun slowly peaked his head above the horizon.

Can’t beat views like this.

Lots of road trains again and all just motoring along. Into Port Augusta for fuel and coffee and to get the blood circulating again. Once all the fog has gone it is truly another glorious day.

Another beautiful day

Check in with Karl and get back out there to find the Wilmington turnoff. Now Mr GPS kept telling me to do a u-turn which had me very confused and had me pulling onto the verge a couple of times to double check on the phone.

Finally with my head sorted out and heading in the right direction, I take the Wilmington turn off, stop for a photo (not in the right spot) of the old Davo Banner shot and had a couple moments silence before heading into the range to enjoy Horrocks Pass.

Wilmington turn off
Banner shot, well nearly

Well there was no enjoying Horrocks Pass today as the caravan drivers would not pull over so it was a slow and painful wind through the range until I could finally get past them all. Through Wilmington and onto Orroroo.

Was hoping to catch up with a blogger I follow Vantastic Aus however our stars didn’t align but I stopped anyway and waved a g’day anyhoos. It so peaceful out here, I didn’t realise how much I missed it.

Orroroo – waving HI

Have I mentioned what a beautiful day it is now…sunshine and lollipops for as far as the eye can see and a few fixer uppers that could use some love and attention….maybe some new foundations and brickwork too!!

Barrier Highway
Just needs a little bit of work

I was asking a friend recently who travelled through this way, did they see the windfarm blade at Burra but my mistake it’s actually at Mount Bryan just north of Burra. Sorry for the bum steer Tina.

Mount Bryan Wind Blade

Burra for fuel and the accustomed servo prepacked ham, cheese and tomato sambo which I sat on a bench in town to eat.

Burra lunch stop

Into Renmark for fuel and had to stop this time at Paringa for the Silo art that I missed on the way over before reaching the Yamba Dunlop crossing……it’s pleasant not to have the sun in my eyes at this time of the day.

Paringa Silo Art
Paringa Silo Art
Yamba Dunlop archway

I keep seeing this person following me, so take a pic just in case it’s a stalker…..LOL

Stalker??

Finally almost home…..well maybe not just back in Victoria.

Made it back to Victoria

Into Mildura, fuel up get some Red Rooster for dinner which was surprisingly not greasy and nice, then into the Mildura Motor Inn for the night. I really nailed it with this motel – it’s palatial compared to all the others I’ve stayed in on this trip.

Bed after the block and I get a sleep in in the morning as only a short 400 odd kays tomorrow.

Border Run 23-Day 4

Border Village to Wudinna SA

All the time zones messed with my head and I didn’t get the greatest nights sleep. Was eventually woken by the music of exhaust tunes. Waves from rooms across the carpark and the banter and comradery is fantastic. Had to put a little air in Dudley’s rear tyre and then off I go.

Looking after Dudley

The sun is blaring in your face and with the mist/moisture still clouding the screen made it hard to see. It was a chilling 1 degree this morning with the sun coming up and I was wondering whether my heated grips were actually working..lol

Good morning Sunshine

Into the Nullarbor Roadhouse for fuel and coffee and appears this was the plan of nearly everyone that left BV this morning as they all started to roll in. Met Chicky and his group and I joined them before we all headed off again.

Nullarbor Roadhouse morning coffee

It really is turning out to be another beautiful day….why wouldn’t you want to be out here.

why wouldn’t ya…

About halfway between Nullarbor Roadhouse & Penong have my very own Outback Truckers experience, complete with police escort and told to “get off the road” so gingerly edged onto the rocky verge. Seriously had no room if I’d have stayed on the bitumen.

Outback Truckers
Outback Truckers

Play tag with the Chicky and the boys until we roll into Penong for lunch. Our playing tag is an ongoing event throughout the day until Ceduna…like playing leap frog.

Parked up for lunch Penong
Chicky & The Boys

Into Ceduna and other riders share waves all round as there are several groups at fuels stops and everybody is absolutely fabulous as you ride by waving back at them all.

Staying tonight in Wudinna….home to the Australian Farmer. Bumped into some more new friends at the servo and wished them well for the rest of the journey. For me it’s time to check in at The Gawler Ranges Motel unload then head into the pub to meet Eric, brother Ken, Jeff and a couple of others that had mentioned they were staying there tonight so I bought them a round, while we chewed the fat and reminisced about our journey to Border Village for the 2023 Border Run.

Wudinna – Australian Farmer

Note for next time….book at the Wudinna Hotel Motel, the rooms are heaps nicer, modern, attached to the pub which is also very nice and cheaper than what I booked and what I have in comparison.

Swapped details with one of the originators of the Border Run & The Pudding – Eric and hope that he drops me a line when he is on his travels..cos as always, if you are on two wheels and need a bed, cuppa or garage, the door is open.

Back at my motel that offers nothing, I walked to the servo to grab a steak sandwich for dinner, then walked back in total darkness (which was a little scary) to my less than ordinary room where the air-conditioner doesn’t work and we are supposed to have -2 tonight. Edit – I did eventually figure out the air-conditioner and it stayed on all night.

Tomorrow is another day and hopefully my choice in motels is much better.

Border Run 23-Day 3

Ceduna to Border Village – The Event!!

Got a good night’s sleep and woke to the alarm. Get ready but tummy is not happy so wait another half hour before heading out the door at 6:30am. Noticed a friends bike parked up next door but considering the hour and not knowing when they got in left them to their schedule undisturbed. It’s dark so the driving lights are very welcomed. Thought I’d just sit on about 80-90kph and settle into the darkness before hitting the speed limit but that was cut short as a trucks lights were very obvious in my mirrors, so up to speed with all lights blazing very quickly.

First stop Penong for fuel and a couple of pics of the largest windmill as you do, then off again bound for Nundroo. There really is not much out here but so much……houses are scattered amongst the plains and the vastness of the isolation is so apparent. It really does take your breath away.

Penong Windmills

The obligatory road signs out here are a bit different to the cities but nonetheless very notable and a reminder that you still need to be alert. Thankfully the only wildlife encountered has already met its maker, so it was dodging the remains this morning about 10 kays either side of Nundroo (known wombat territory).

Caution…bit different to the cities
So vast and isolated, yet so beautiful

It’s fresh but not that cold and a little windy but nothing like yesterday, so the ride so far is pretty good. Had to stop at the start of the Nullarbor for the sign pic, naturally before heading down to the Head of the Bight. Well, admission these days is $18 and while I only want a couple of pics, couldn’t see the value in that so took one from the carpark and left…it wasn’t very good so isn’t here.

Nullarbor Plain

Into Nullarbor Roadhouse for fuel and coffee and meet a couple of interesting fellas and guess where they were going…yep Border Village….doh. They are a little surprised that I am riding on my own but leave me to do my thing and head on their way.

Nullarbor Roadhouse
Nullarbor Roadhouse…the original

Fair way down the road and I take a turn to a vantage point of the Bight. It’s my favorite big chunky rocks and gravel…argh!! Too late now, you’re in girlfriend so gingery I wiggle my way across this terrain and park Dudley up safely and go and take some pics….I’m sure the caravaners were having a good old laugh at me. The pics really don’t do the view justice, it is breathtaking.

Great Aussie Bight

The road is in really good condition and I have no idea why it is 3 colours.

I really am a long way from home
3 colours of the road
More warnings, you never can be too careful

Anyway, did you know the RFDS has a landing strip on The Nullarbor (Eyre Highway) with what is like pedestrian markings for the start and finish of it…..well it does.

RFDS Rd strip

Into Border Village and some riders had already arrived yesterday and today with more to arrive as the day goes on. Across to get the pic of the SA/WA sign (which is under repair atm) before heading back to start the socializing and complete my check-in with SCDR – job done!!!

SA/WA Border – Made it!!

Old and new faces, only 2 female riders this year and time to chill out. 2309.7 kms from home…WOO HOO!!

Border Run 23-Day 2

Renmark to Ceduna

Woke early, porridge for breaky and just got going, left Renmark about 6am in a clear and warm morning, lights blazing. Still required the heated suit though.

Noticed the sun starting to rise in my rear view and couldn’t resist at least having a crack at getting the pic without stopping and well it’s not bad.

Sunrise out of Renmark
Goyder Hway sunrise

Pretty non eventful along the Goyder Highway this morning and very mindful that 6 years ago along this very same stretch of road, I it a roo, so eyes were peeled waiting for the giant hopping rats. Thankfully none of them turned up.

Beautiful Day

Not far out of Burra there was evidence of rain and you could see that somewhere up the road I was going to run into some. Around Spalding it started not much but enough to keep you on your toes. Zigged and zagged through the lush green fields in this area and the GPS had me going through Georgetown instead of Crystalbrook to get to my next fuel at Shell Warnertown. Now doing calculations, kays versus fuel I wasn’t sure this was a good idea. By the time I got to Shell Warnertown, it was raining good and proper and I had been counting the kilometers as I’m still losing about 30kays on the tank. I pulled in on reserve without 2lt left.

Phew just made it!!

Asked the old mate at the servo what the weather was like heading towards the Gutter and he reckoned I should miss most of it, as I was going through the middle. Well, it was intermittent all the way to Port Augusta and beyond. What I did notice that has changed is all the windfarms popping up, they stand there like white soldiers waiting for the weather gods to instruct them to turn.

Port Augusta windfarm
Oh no, think old mate got it wrong

Had moments of clear sky and pulled into Kimba – Halfway Across Australia for a pic of the Silo Art, lunch at the Big Gallah before grabbing some fuel for the next leg

Kimba Silo Art
Gallah-Halfway Across Australia

Not sure if I got more wet from the actual rain or from the road trains I had to sit behind. Even had my own Outback Truckers experience sitting behind a 1-1/2 lane wide load. Sat at a safe distance and when it was appropriate he pulled slightly left to allow me through and the escort vehicle did the same when I caught up to him. Lucky because you couldn’t see a bloody thing from all the road spray even sitting that far behind…passing was interesting.

Between storms on the Eyre Highway and a reminder that I haven’t got that far to go today…only 399 kms

Eyre Highway
Not far to go-Ceduna…lol

I’d forgotten how long and ribbony the road can seem….almost like Wiley Coyote grabbed one end of it and gave it one massive shake and it just rippled all the way along the highway and you cannot see the end.

Wuddina for fuel and 3 BMW blokes pulled in, all with Dick Strawbridge walrus moustaches and it went something like this.

Bloke: gday love, you going to the Border Run

Me: yep but I got get going cos I have a hydration failure and need parts.

Bloke: Can’t help maybe something in Ceduna. Well see you there, have a good ride.

Me: Thank you and you too!!

Skies looking a little threatening…..

Stormy skies racing to get to Ceduna

Off I go now looking to find a camping or sporting store open as I’ve no idea when they close. No fear of fuel consumption, cranked on a little speed to ensure I made Ceduna by 4:30pm. Local sports store doesn’t sell camelback anything but they kindly directed me to a camping store on the main street. They didn’t have exactly what I need but had 2x alternatives that I could MacGyver to hopefully make work…..problem solved. Fuel and into my motel for the night which has a restaurant attached so I don’t have to go too far for dinner, which I hear you asking….yes, it was delicious.

Ceduna Motor Inn

MacGyvered the camelback spares to fit what I needed and now have Frankenbak….lol

Frankenbak

Border Run 23-Day 1

Home to Renmark

Now the time stamps on the camera photos are wrong as I forgot to set the time before I left, however the time stamp on my phone pics are correct.

Surprisingly, I was out the garage on time and up to get fuel and my start docket before 7am.

Ready to leave home
Proof of start docket

The fog, potholes, wildlife & black ice has been pretty bad on the Murray Valley Highway lately, so I made the decision earlier in the week to go out through Walwa, Jingelic to Holbrook and then meet the freeway, which turned out to be the right choice. Fog was still pretty bad and the going was slow but safe.

Foggy morning

20kms out of Holbrook and its all sunshine and lollipops and stayed this way for the rest of the day.

Take the Yarrawonga exit and head out to Corowa for fuel and an unscheduled fuel stop and a coffee for me. Back out and through to Deniliquin for the next fuel stop. Nothing exciting to report, just fresh air and lots of road trains in both directions. The Canola fields are starting to show their colour and are all over the place.

Canola fields between Corowa & Deniliquin

Up the Cobbs Hway and take the Pretty Pine turn off. There are lots of road works on the Moulamein/Kyalite Rd, dodging one hole or gravel to miss another. Came across one set of lights that had a physical timer on them…first time I’ve seen this on a road work site.

Roadworks Moulamein/Kyalite Rd
New age traffic system

The skies are as blue as with wispy clouds all over the place. The telegraph soldiers still line this road and I gave then a tiny salute as I rode past them.

Telegraph Soldiers

A combination of cross and head winds along this stretch was unrelenting and there wasn’t many vehicles on this road and thankfully for that as the dodging of road repairs & bad surfaces was insane. Compared to home it’s warming up and by the time I get to Balranald for lunch, it’s time to peel off some layers and a balmy 26 degrees.

stripping of the layers

Coming into Euston and since the last time I was through here there are so many changes – housing estates and new factory/warehousing amazing have popped up everywhere.

Euston housing development

It’s an absolutely beautiful today the skies have been like this for nearly the entire time. Oh boy, I’ve missed this, riding around the country smelling and seeing all that is out there to offer.

Into Mildura, checked out where my motel is for the return trip and out the other side in no time. However, head winds meet me now. I’ve been cruising nicely with the cruise control but now doing calculations and decide to make an adjustment to ensure I reach Renmark on the one tank.

The sun is starting the lower now and at that awkward position as I spy the “Welcome to South Australia” sign, naturally have to stop. Naturally all the cars and trucks I’ve overtaken now pass me on the side of the road…LOL.

Welcome to South Australia Kimmie

In Yamba check point for the mandatory inspection, the guy is very nice and laughed when I told him all I had was hot chocolate and porridge in an esky in my top box. The surprised look on his face when he witnessed the truth of my cargo was priceless….LOL.

Dunlop Yamba Quarantine crossing

Into Remark, fueled up, checked in and off for Chinese down the road for dinner.

A big day for me and Dudley, total of 894.5 kays for the day – a bit more than I’d planned but all things considered (lack of ride fitness) , I feel pretty good. Qualified ride for SCDR 800 completed.

Finish SCDR800

FRE S#67 – Bermagui

Different plan of attack for this one….up and back in the day.

Stayed at Mum & Dads on my camp mattress with my sleeping bag but an upset tummy was root of a disturbed nights sleep. After fighting to gain more sleep was up and out at stoopid dark o’clock and off to the Metro Doyalson to gain my start docket @ 3:31am ODO 102770.

SPOT tracker red light starts flashing not long down the road – will have to wait. Fog is this mornings threat it’s not bad just present but we all know how that can change. Down the deserted freeway, well maybe only a dozen cars and 1 bike the whole way and the new Freecom4+ playing country music in my ears. Hornsby for an unscheduled stop for SPOT batteries and then back on the freeway.

Hornsby Shell Coles Express – change of batteries

Passed Campbelltown and I’m tired and know the signs well enough now to not ignore them. Into the Frank Partridge VC rest area to grab a 20min nap. Lots of truck with their air conditioning rattling away.

Frank Partridge VC rest area

Back on the freeway and the fogs still hanging around. Uneventful until the sun starts to awaken around Kiama and offers some fantastic views.

Around Kiama
Morning has broken

Arrive in Nowra about 7:30am for raisin toast and coffee (was more like luke warm dish water) and a couple of QLD FarRider pull in for their breaky, across the road for Dudleys breaky (fuel) and we are off again. The new Freecom4+ has been great but now after stopping the voice command isn’t working. So it turns out that the bluetooth disconnects at a distance and you have to manually reconnect it, with that done, I’m off again with Troy Caser Daly singing away.

From here, the blissfully traffic free morning stops. So much road works and slow drivers, people you don’t have to do 10-15kph under the limit…..the roads clear. Note: always obeying the roadwork speed limit signs….there could be someone working on the side.

Turn off the highway and just follow the road into Bermagui. See a couple of riders at the servo, get to the check-in location, park 10:50am and only 1 other bike to be seen….hmm, check-in could be real easy. Have I got the right day??? Then like bees swarming, riders start to arrive, flag hung and check-in opens. A HUGE thanks to my esteemed FarRider assistant Hackle for helping and feeding me!!

Congratulations to the new riders for completing the first of may more FarRides.

But my ride isn’t finished still have 500km to go. Fuel on the way out of town and up the Princes Highway, a bit more traffic than this morning and a few spirited overtaking opportunities were taken advantage of. Past many times but don’t recall ever stopping at is the pink plane at Coila, so today was the day.

Oops, Coila plane

Heading north through the pretty town of Moruya (must stop here one day) and into Batemans Bay and as Snaggle Puss would say “exit stage left” at the roundabout. The Kings Highway is a road I have not done in years and today was perfect. Clear winding roads, a tiny bit of roadworks, great scenery and a seamless run into Braidwood, then Bungendore.

Been up for ages and thought, yep I deserve an ice-cream but the town was packed so just kept going. I haven’t been on the road that heads west out of Bungedore before (turns out it’s called Bungendore Rd) and the GPS wasn’t happy that I took this route and kept telling me to do a u-turn. In the end it messed with my head that much, that I pulled over and consulted the phone and decided to cancel the GPS route and plug in a single destination and kept going.

Watched the sky change though and thought at some stage I am going to get wet. Went to have a sip from the trusty camelbak and bring the tube around and whoshska….the sucky thingy flew straight of the end of the tube fixture. Bugger!!! Lucky it has a swivel valve and was lucky to turn it around so Dudley didn’t get soaked with drink.

Popped out on the Federal Highway and the rain clouds I’d been watching decided to shed some tears. Not heavy just enough to wet the road and say it rained. It was short and sweet only about 20 minutes and took the heat right out of the day….was sitting at 32degrees prior. Mr Freecom4+ also decided that he was tired and after being on since 3:00am that morning said “goodbye”.

Goulburn for fuel about 3:40pm and some chippies and drink for me. About 200kms to get home, a stretch of road I could “almost” ride with my eyes shut (assured I did not). Cruise control set, singing to myself and it’s just a matter of get around all the traffic. There was this one Ranger Ute that I’d watched for about 1km sitting behind another big ute who I actually thought was towing the Ranger (he was sitting that close). But no he wasn’t in tow and waited until I was at his tailgate at which point he decided to pull out……”tool”!!! Crisis averted…..some how new this idiot would do something so was prepared. He did the same thing to another driver further up the road……”tool”.

lost the sucky thingy

It’s been a long time since I’ve required to crank out a big day like this and the old body and bum are starting to burn. Navigating through the traffic heading and I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face when I turned into home at 6:20pm ODO 103793 – 1023km for the day & FRE S#67 Bermagui….Done and Dusted.

FRE S#67 Bermagui Done & Dusted 1023km

Now to get new shoes for Dudley ready for the next adventure.
Thanks for reading.

FRE 65 – Tooleybuc

So much for the ride calendar this year but thanks to relaxing of some restrictions we were able to still proceed with a slightly modified FRE #65 to Tooleybuc.

Start ODO

Simple plan, leave the local Shell servo @ 12:02pm Fri 6th Nov, head out through Lithgow via Bells Line of Road, onto Bathurst (no stopping at Mount Panorama this time)…traffic was terrible before cruising into Cowra. A quick stop at the Cowra Shell for fuel and on the way outta town, nearly got t-boned by some numpty not giving way to me….certainly got the heart rate going and gave Dudley horn a good work out.

It’s so picturesque and green at the moment and the tantalising smell of clean air danced in my nostrils. Bit of a different route today, going through Gooloogong where I naturally had to get a pic in front of the pub.

Bike in front of pub

Then into Eugowra a lovely quiet little town full of amazing murals. Would’ve liked to take more photos of them but time was ticking and a comfort stop was resting heavily on me…lol

Continuing onto Parkes through the greens fields and thought about stopping for dinner which was my original plan but decided to push on through to West Wyalong. The sun is starting its decent where visibility becomes challenging. Fuel and dinner (cheese and tomato sandwich) in West Wyalong. Heading out to Dudley and Squeeky has just fuelled up. Asked his plan and he was staying there the night while I still had 2.5hrs to go.

Out into the lowering sun which at times is blinding and before long Weethalle is upon me and the necessary sunset and silo photo. Temps are starting to drop but as usual I’m layered up and at the turn of a dial the heated suits will fire into action.

Sunset at Weethalle
Weethalle Silos

Exit stage left onto Kolkilbertoo Rd in search for the Big Tennis Racquet in Barellan. The sun has now set and lights blazing I head off on a very desolate road. Not much happening in Barellan tonight and the tennis racquet was pretty easy to find…..even in the dark – you’d have to be blind to miss it. LOL

The Big Tennis Racquet Barellan

Next stop Griffith for fuel and it’s proper dark now. The only wildlife I saw were bunnies…..lots and lots of bunnies. Starting to get weary and wondering why I didn’t plan to stop in West Wyalong…..ride fitness just isn’t what it used to be. About 40 minutes to go and the body is protesting. Much more traffic on the Kidman Way both north and south bound. So many oncoming vehicles refusing to dip their lights on my approach almost blinding me in some cases….at a minimum leaving little white spots in my vision.

Finally into Goolgowi Motor Inn for the night after 750km for the day. As per my last stop over here, the room was spotless and the bed comfortable and beckoning me.

Beautiful morning out on the Mid Western Highway as the sun rises and I bop along heading for Hay. Ya gotta love it when you have the road to yourself, the smell of a fresh new day and peacefulness all around you. Through Hay and onto the plains…that long vast stretch where the horizon never ends. I decided to stop and see cousin Sheila and Reg on their little stretch of land 49km east of Balranald at Hells Gate….how do cousin!

Mid Western Highway
Howdy Cousin Sheila

Balranald for a scheduled stop for fuel and food. Decided to try out the Discovery Café Justin the right hand side as you come into town. Lovely café with good coffee and friendly service. I recommend a stop here if you need a coffee and food. Have plenty of time since I left earlier than planned this morning so decide to relax a little.

Outta town and onto Yanga Way heading for Tooleybuc. Lots of signs advising of the COVID checking stations at both Swan Hill and Tooleybuc…luckily I don’t require any passes to get there. Very uneventful but noticed fields of new plantings and one adventurous fox. Like a few others we are early and enjoy the time playing catch up.  I decided to go and say hello to the officials man and womaning the check point. Quite a friendly bunch who were happy to oblige me with a photo.

Tooleybuc NSW – check point with friendlies

The gravel carpark of the Tooleybuc Sporting Club is where we convene today under the shade of the gum trees. My ride is done and dusted at 1072km. A good gathering for the first ride in a while and even a few crossed the border to say hello. Lovely to see friendly faces and chinwag at a safe distance with everyone. Big thanks to Reader57 for conducting both checkins.

Done & Dusted – 1072km
Finishers FRE 65 Tooleybuc

Time to turn back and start the trip home. Depending on how I’m feeling I have a Plan A and B. Plan A Deniliquin for the night, Plan B Wagga Wagga. It’s getting warmer and I’m hungry, should’ve had my sandwich I bought in Balranald while I was in Tooleybuc…never mind. The roads to Kyalite and Moulamein are deserted but peaceful in that “love riding” kinda of way. I find a nice big tree in Moulamein and park under it, find a park bench and take a few minutes to have my sambo and check in with Sweety. Shoulder is starting to get really sore and I decide to reassess in Deni. Fuel In Deni and ask directions for the Deni Painted Water Tower. After a few wrong turns I eventually find it and get a pic.

Deniliquin Water Tower

Seems too early to pull up so I decide to push on through the pain and the next 250km and head to Wagga Wagga. Had plans to get pics in Urana of the Giant Spider and then the Lockhart Water Tower but my butt is sore and I just want to get to where I need to be. Room booked at lunch time at the Club Motel and am extremely pleased to pull into the carpark, get off, unpack and get some dinner. Old mate 2 rooms down recommend the fish & chip shop a short walk away and he was dead on the money. Awesome hamburger…thanks man.

Check in with Sweety, full tummy, hot shower and it’s into bed for a not very good nights sleep. Woke at 4:30am, thought about getting going but my shoulder decided it needed more rest time. Ended up leaving at 6:30am instead. The plan was to go through Junee, Boorowa, Crookwell, Goulburn then home…but ya know what plans don’t always go to plan.

A farmer moving sheep just out of Junee had me stopped for 10-15 minutes while they made the next paddock. It’s a very very windy morning 9 degrees, heated gear working nicely and 12 degrees when I pull into Boorowa for a coffee at Chelle’s Kitchen. So far all is going to plan, that is until I leave Boorowa. Firstly I head out in the wrong direction – uey and back into town. Take the correct turn, then the next but not the next (so it turned out). GPS tells me to go straight ahead and the sign says “Crookwell Alternate Route”……so I followed the GPS.

I don’t know this area so follow the GPS into Rye Park but after that….well I should’ve taken the alternate route back in Boorowa. The road turns to gravel…yep and I have no idea for how long its going to be like this. It’s gravel isn’t too bad and I even manage to keep decent speed (very unusual) and just mosey along. Off camber corners on back country roads..gravel roads not my favourite. Use the back brake and the gears….don’t touch the front…had to keep reminding myself. Blakney Creek and I thought the road was going to change but no and now I’m doing calculations and am not sure if I will make it with fuel…..oops, should’ve taken that other turn.

Rye Park or Blakney Creek Rd…gravel either way

A sign says Dalton but no fuel and the road eventually turns back to tarmac and with a sigh of relief I ride into Gunning. Decide not to test the fuel gods and fill up at the Mobil take a break, have a stretch….and suck up the shoulder pain.

From here’s it’s like auto-pilot…onto the freeway and the slab home. Still windy and cool, an easy but uncomfortable run. Not a lot of traffic until you near Campbelltown and then the jostling for road space begins. King Georges road, Homebush Bay Drive, Ryde Rd and home is not far.

Into the drive just after 1pm having completed 2027km for the 3 days….a tad sore and Dudley’s very dirty and needs a bath.

Thanks for reading….until the next time…..rubber side down.

Hip Hip Hooray!!

After a fabulous feed at the Goolgowi Ex-Servies Club, it’s time to get on the road again and pump out another 400 kays. What for I hear you say…….well there is a birthday party that I need to be at in Tintaldra – “naturally”. The humidity is oppressive and I am struggling with not enough sleep but I take the precautions I need and head back over previously travelled roads to get there.

A short stop at Waddi Roadhouse Darlington Point to soak myself to bring the body temperature down and refill my camelback. The heat of the day is climbing still but the humidity is relentless. A beeline for the turn off to Collingullie which takes me through The Rock, Henty, Culcairn before turning east and heading for Holbrook. Dudley loves the country roads and now with the oiler feeder temporarily fixed, I can focus on keeping myself fixed.

On days like this the camelback is an essential piece of equipment. Drink, well sip actually, even if you don’t feel you need it…..your body will thank you for it at the end of the day when you get off. Feeling pretty ordinary when I pull into Uncle Leo’s Caltex Holbrook, heads pounding and the humidity is killing me. Another dousing and some Panadol, message Karl and the birthday crew with my eta and off we go again.

Once you leave Holbrook and head east it’s apparent the fires have touched this area. Charred and blackened trees are all around, paddocks are scorched while some stand green as green can be…..how it can be so precise is just beyond my comprehension. The best way to experience this country I reckon is to take the minor roads that have you weaving your way through farmland, forestry and mountains, watching the farmers work their crops, livestock or more so of late due to the fires, rebuilding fence lines and shed for feed. Your heart goes out to them and all they’ve been through.

Keeping a nice steady pace and it’s not long before I come to Jingellic. Lovely sight to see campers back and the river up (not to normal but more than it has been) across the bridge and into Victoria heading for Walwa, then Tintaldra. The air has changed, smells different…..still the burnt smell lingers but mixed with the fresh aroma of new vegetation and water – yes you can smell water, but the view of the devastation that the fires bought to this area is upsetting. The hillside has collapsed in one area and part of the road is closed (traffic light system in place). And she’s coming round the mountain here she comes….winding my way around and watching the scenery change, the livestock with wide eyes (can only imagine the images that taunt their minds) as I approach Clarkes Lagoon. Visited here at xmas, now the land is scorched, the sign melted but new foliage is apparent everywhere you look.

6km to go and that sense of being home beats hard in my chest and Dudley is feeling spirited. That final turn onto The Back Rd and into the caravan park and all is good in the world. Friends are gathered at the camp kitchen, so glad to see them all. Up to the cabin, unpack, shower (feel human) and join the festivities.

The pub for dinner and a well-earned Ginger Ninja, socialising, birthday wishes and generally just chillin’ out. The night descends fast and likewise my energy levels and it’s time to get into bed.

Happy Birthday Mellie & Daddy Bryan!!! Hip Hip Hooray!!! Thanks for allowing me to celebrate your specials days with you!

Sleep came easy and waking came all too soon…argh. Could’ve done staying the day or grabbing a bit more sleep but I have to get home to Sweety. Packed, cuppa tea, breakfast and chit chat and before I knew it was 8:00am. Wait for most to wake and mosey down to the camp kitchen to start my farewells before heading off. Got away at 9:00am

Tintaldra Caravan Park

Home the quick way but not before the obligatory stop at Southern Cloud for that photo.

Southern Cloud Lookout

Mother Nature is hard at work in this entire area repairing herself.

Mother Nature hard at work

Temperature today is much better almost perfect riding weather and Dudley and my hearts sink a little as we leave this area that has so entrenched itself into our hearts.

Through Tooma, into Tumbarumba, Batlow and Tumut again the evidence of the fires is very apparent and again Mother Nature is hard at work as are the locals and volunteers rebuilding what once was….bigger and better.

Out onto the freeway and it’s an easy run home and into the garage at 3:40pm…..not bad for a late start.
